With the help of ARAMARK and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, the College is getting greener and greener. ARAMARK has removed the more than 3,000 trays at the Liberty Street Fresh Food Company – saving detergent, energy and almost 90,000 gallons of water per semester, not to mention the estimated 2,000 pounds of food that’s not going to waste each week anymore – and has switched to 100 percent biodegradable takeout containers and is even selling reusable shopping bags at the Hungry Cougar and the Stern Center Food Court.
For its part, DHEC granted the College $25,000 to offer employees professional development and to purchase recycling bins for the Beatty, Tate and Lightsey centers and for the AT&T and the J.C. Long buildings. Look out for more recycling bins and for campuswide recycling workshops in the near future.
For more information about recycling on campus, check out page 60 of your campus directory. Note: The campus directory was printed this year on 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper, thanks to the College’s Sustainability Committee.
