The accounting program is separately
accredited by the American Assembly
of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
It is one of only 170 programs in the
country to enjoy that designation.
The mission of the accounting program is
to assist individuals in acquiring the
knowledge and skills needed to be leading
accounting professionals.
As
an undergraduate accounting major, you will study the rules
of financial accounting and federal taxation, how organizations
use managerial accounting techniques to accomplish goals,
and how information technology is employed to assist organizations
across all accounting functions. The undergraduate curriculum
provides the basic background for various careers within
the accounting profession. Many of our students pursue formal
professional designations, such as CPA (Certified
Public Accountant), CMA (Certified Management Accountant),
and CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), upon completion of
their undergraduate coursework.
The
department also offers a graduate accounting program that
allows students to earn Master
of Science in Accountancy degrees
from the Graduate School at the College of Charleston. Most
Masters students launch their careers as client-service professionals
with public accounting and consulting firms. In most states,
including South Carolina, the number of credits required
to become a CPA is in excess of those earned by an undergraduate
accounting student. Thus, many aspiring CPAs choose to pursue
a graduate accounting degree from the College of Charleston
to both meet the education requirements to become a CPA and
to gain a greater understanding of accounting.
