OFFICE HOURS:

My office is in the green building at the corner of St. Phillips and Wentworth Street. I will hold office hours from 10:00 until 11:30 Monday, Wednesday, Friday. If you can not see me at those times please make an appointment after the regular class period. You can reach me via the Department of Sociology at 953-5738 or 953-7105.

CLASS FORMAT AND ATTENDANCE:

Class time will be spent in a combination of lecture, discussion and small group tasks. The lectures will contain much of the exam content. However, for us to engage in mutually informative discussions, you must read the material assigned. YOU CAN NOT MAKE A DECENT GRADE IN THIS CLASS WITHOUT READING THE TEXT! Attendance and participation in class discussion will be noted and will influence your grade.

ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMINATIONS:

Assignments: There will be four short papers offered for extra credit throughout the semester. Each paper will be based on the readings assigned in Feuds About Family. I will send an email message with your assignment about a week before each exam. The papers will be worth up to five points extra credit each. The extra credit will be added to the exam grades.

Exams: There will be four hourly examinations. The exams will cover information from lecture, text, and films. A ten point grading scale will be used:

100- 90 = A 76 - 70 = C

89 - 87 = B+ 69 - 60 = D

86 - 80 = B Below 59 = F

79 - 77 = C+

Assignments: There will be four required assignments throughout the semester. Each assignment will receive up to five bonus points which will be added to the score of the exam covering the material. The assignments will be made available a week before the exam. They must be typed, proofed, stapled and handed in on time. I reserve the right not to accept them if any of these four of the conditions are not met.

Grade Appeals: If you have a question about a test item or want to appeal your grade you must submit your test to me along with a letter within one week of the day that the exams were returned to the class. The letter must include:

1) an indication of which item(s) is (are) under question,

2) a brief summary of the problem you perceive with your grade,

3) a clear statement of what you are requesting me to do,

4) a rationale for the action you propose (e.g., why your answer is as good or better than the one I expected).
