| Pursuant to the Immigration
Reform and Control Act of 1986 (I-9) and its implementing regulations
issued in the Federal Register dated May 1, 1987, all employees
hired after June 1, 1987, are subject to said law and the verification
requirements therein.
All departments must submit a valid and current INS Form I-9
for each student employee. These documents are stored in the
Student Employment Office within the Career Center for at least
five years.
Additional information on INS regulations may be found at http://uscis.gov/graphics/index.htm.
Completing the INS Form I-9
If the student was previously employed by the College of Charleston
after June 1, 1987, FWS or NWS, an I-9 must be on file in the
employing department. Please note, as of July 1, 1999, the student’s
original I-9, along with copies of proper documentation, must
be sent along with the SEAF to the Student Employment Programs
Coordinator for processing. As of this date, no original I-9
forms will be filed with the employing departments.
The Career Center tracks the submission of I-9s. If a SEAF
is received and no I-9 is on file, the information is considered
incomplete and will be returned to the employing department.
The student must first read the instruction sheet prior to
completing the I-9 form. Section 1 is to be completed and signed
by the student being hired. Section 2 is to be completed and
certified by the employing department. To complete Section 2,
the student is required to produce a document from "list
A" which establishes identity and employment eligibility
OR produce one document from "list B" which establishes
identity AND one document from "list C" which establishes
employment eligibility.
Employers cannot specify which document or combination of documents
is to be produced. Employers are required to inspect documents
to verify and record the following:
1. Authenticity of documents - facsimiles are not acceptable;
the document must be valid.
2. Recording document identification, document ID number and
expiration date (if any). If there is not an expiration date,
mark N/A in the blank.
