Major/Career Information
- Career Assessments are
available to assist students in clarifying career fields
and majors which relate to interests, values and skills.
Appointments are required to take some of these assessments.
- Appointments are available
for students/alumni to discuss career options, choosing/changing
a major or other career related concerns.
- Career Planning Guide
- You and/or your students may pick up a free copy of the
Career Planning Guide from the Career Center. The guide
is filled with information designed to assist students in
every phase of the career decision-making process, from
self-assessment to applying for jobs or graduate school.
- What
Can I Do With a Major In...? Provides information
on each undergraduate major including typical career fields
of graduates, types of employers, and strategies. Both on-line
and print versions are available.
- How to Choose a Major Seminar.
A collaborative effort of the Career Center and the Center
for Academic Advising, this seminar, offered each fall and
spring semester, discusses the importance of self-assessment,
the difference between a liberal arts and technical education,
relating majors to careers, how to declare a major, and
much more.
- The Career Mentor Network
allows students to talk with alumni from the College of
Charleston who can share information and advice regarding
their particular career field and other work related information.
Resumes/Job
Search Correspondence/Interviewing
- The Career Center provides many print
and online resources to assist students in preparing
resumes, cover letters, and other job search correspondence.
Encourage your students to visit our office in order to
take advantage of these resources.
- Students may schedule an individual
appointment or come by our office during our Walk-In
hours (Monday - Friday 1-4 pm) in order to have a staff
member review and critique their resume and/or cover letters.
- Students may schedule a videotaped
practice interview in order to sharpen their interview
skills.
Finding
Jobs and Internships
- CISTERNonline, the Career
Centers' online recruiting system, provides students and
alumni the opportunity to search for internships, volunteer
opportunities, seasonal, on and off campus part time jobs,
and full time career opportunities that have been listed
with the Career Center, as well as a national database of
opportunities listed with the Experience Network, used by
over 500 colleges/universities nationwide. All currently
enrolled students may access CISTERNonline,
and alumni may request access by contacting the Career Center.
Employers are encouraged to contact the Career Center for
information on how they may post opportunities with our
office on CISTERNonline.
- A campus wide Career & Graduate
School Expo is held in the fall semester in order
to connect students with hiring organizations, and FutureQuest
is held in the spring semester in conjunction with The Citadel
and Charleston Southern University. Education Career
Fairs are also held each fall and spring semester
in order for participating school district representatives
to meet with students planning to teach.
- Credential file services
are available for any graduating senior who wishes to maintain
official documents, such as letters of reference or college
transcripts on file. These files may be sent to potential
employers or graduate schools upon the student's request.
- Students/alumni may schedule an individual
appointment with a staff member in order to discuss
job search strategies, interviewing skills, or other topics
related to the successful transition to life after college.
Preparing
for Graduate/Professional School
- Many print resources on graduate schools,
including books and periodicals, are available for students
in the Career Resource Center, including the Peterson's
Guides to Graduate & Professional Schools and many other
reference books.
- Career Services maintains registration booklets
for graduate school admissions tests, including the GRE,
PRAXIS, MCAT, LSAT, etc.
