Suggestions for Teaching All Students (but especially those with Learning Disorders)

The following list has been adapted from the book College and the Learning Disabled Student by C.T. Mangrum and S.S. Strichart.

  1. Provide a detailed, clearly organized syllabus.

  2. Choose textbooks that are clearly written and incorporate useful visual aids.

  3. Take time to explain how to use textbook aids.

  4. Give students ample time for reflection and synthesis or reading assignments. Give students a contextual framework for these assignments.

  5. Provide handouts that are visual and easy to read.

  6. Use a multisensory approach. Offer a variety of assignments (written papers, oral presentations, group projects, 3D models, etc.) when possible.

  7. Review course material often. Begin lectures with a review of previously covered material.

  8. Try to engage students in class discussions. Ask questions.
Personalize course materials to actively involve students.

  9. Provide opportunities for previewing course materials. Use the chalkboard.

  10. Provide outlines of lectures. Use transitions to help students follow lectures.
