Temporary Injuries

We understand that a temporary injury can be very disruptive and, in some cases, adversely affect a student's ability to fully participate in their classes. Although temporary injuries do not qualify as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act and services are not required, the Center for Disability Services (CDS) will make every effort to provide assistance in such situations when resources are available.

Temporary Injury Affecting Use of Dominant Arm or Hand

Assistance available through CDS

  • note taker in class
  • scribe for tests
  • use of a computer for in-class essays and essay tests
  • extra time to complete tests

Temporary Injury Affecting Mobility

If mobility is an issue with the injury or surgery, mobility aids are prescribed by the doctor and appropriately fitted. Mobility aids could be a boot, crutches, scooter, manual wheelchair or motorized wheelchair.

Transportation may become a problem. Our campus is small and centrally located. We do not have a campus transportation system. However, here are some transportation resources within the Charleston area:

If you live on campus

  • Herbert's Mobility, (843) 571-1515, rents scooters and will deliver to you.

If you live off campus

  • Arrange a ride to class with a friend or roommate.
  • Call a cab.
    • Yellow Cab: (843) 577-6565
    • Black Cab Company: Call (843) 216-2627 or visit their website.
Cabs are wheelchair accessible and they have a van with a lift.
  • Use CARTA Express bus system. Call 724-7420 or visit their website for routes, stop locations, schedules, and Tel-A-Ride Service. All of CARTA's vehicles are wheelchair accessible.

Need help carrying books? Are you on the CofC meal plan and need assistance getting a meal for a few days?

Contact the Center for Disability Services at (843) 953-1431 or SNAP@cofc.edu. Every attempt will be made to find assistance for you.

Faculty Notification

With appropriate documentation of a temporary injury (see the Student Affiars website for medical documentation form), the Associate Dean of Students, 67 George Street, will notify professors about the injury and the difficulties the student may encounter in the academic setting due to the injury.
