THE EDWARD EMERSON TOWELL CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP

Department of Chemistry at the College of Charleston

The Edward Emerson Towell Chemistry Scholarship is available to an entering freshman student at the College of Charleston who has chosen to major in chemistry or biochemistry. The Towell Scholarship is approximately $2,000 per year and is renewable for four years as long as standards for continuation are met.

The Towell Chemistry Scholarship has been established in honor of Dr. Edward E. Towell (1913-2003), Professor of Chemistry, by his former students and colleagues. Professor Towell received his B.S. in chemistry from the College in 1934 and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1944. He joined the faculty of the College of Charleston in 1943 and served until his retirement in 1976. In addition to his service as Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Towell served as Dean of the College and as acting President during his career. The Towell Library building on campus was named in his honor.

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Charleston has a record of excellence in training students for careers in chemistry, medicine, and other technical areas. Over 50% of the graduates of the department receive Ph.D., M.D. or D.M.D. degrees. During the last decade, chemistry students at the college have been awarded fellowships for graduate study totaling over $1,000,000. College of Charleston chemistry students have received Ph.D. degrees from such outstanding universities as Arizona, California-Berkeley, Delaware, Duke, Emory, Florida, Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, M.I.T., Princeton, Tennessee, Texas A & M, South Carolina, and Virginia. A recent evaluation conducted by the South Carolina Commission of Higher Education states that..."The College of Charleston should be complimented for its excellent undergraduate program. Materials provided by the Commission suggest that the chemistry program for undergraduates may be one of the best among public institutions in South Carolina and perhaps in the Southeast." The reviewers added..."The students are impressive. The college has been able to attract good students and their records of success after graduation are impressive."

Criteria for consideration for this scholarship include (1) application and acceptance to the College of Charleston; (2) declaration of chemistry or biochemistry as a major; (3) an outstanding high school record as evidenced by being in the top 5% in high school class rank or by a score of 1200+ on the S.A.T.; (4) a strong interest in science as evidenced by advanced science courses and science related extra-curricular activities; and (5) a letter of recommendation from the student's high school chemistry teacher.
