Convocation

Have a Question About Convocation?

Q: What is Convocation?
A: Convocation is an official event, in which all new students, all faculty, other members of the college community, and invited guests convene to begin the academic year, to learn about the traditions of the college, and to hear an intellectually challenging speaker.

Q: I am a new student at the College of Charleston. Do I have to attend Convocation?
A: Yes. All new undergraduate students are expected to attend Convocation. It is the first formal event of your college career, just as Commencement is the last. In addition, you can expect at least some of your classes to make specific reference to the speech and reading.

Q: I am not a new undergraduate student, but I am interested in attending. May I?
A: Yes. Although you are not required to attend, you are welcome to do so.

Q: What should I do to prepare for Convocation?
A: You should read the book by our speaker, using the reading guide to help you think critically about points raised in the book.

Q: Do I need to bring my book and reading guide to the Convocation?
A: You do not need to bring the book, although you may choose to do so. You may want to bring just the reading guide and pen/pencil in case you want to make some notes.

Q: I did not receive a copy of the book. Whom do I contact?
A: The books were distributed to all incoming students who attended a June or July orientation session. To allow time for students registered for the August orientation session to read the book, it will be mailed to them by July 15th. Because of the length of time it takes international mailings, books for international students will be held at the Office of International Studies on campus until their arrival. New undergraduate students who did not receive a copy should contact the Office of New Student Programs (843) 953-2017. If you are not a new student, copies are also available in the College Bookstore or on reserve in the library.

Q: What can I expect after the Convocation ceremony in the arena?
A: We will progress down George Street through Porter’s Lodge to the Cistern yard in front of Randolph Hall. We will conclude the ceremony and you will have a chance to meet informally with the keynote speaker, the President, faculty, key administrators, SGA leaders, staff and alumni. You will also be asked to sign a new student register, adding your name to the log of previous years' attendees at Convocation.

Q: Are there any special events associated with Convocation?
A: A calendar of related activities is posted separately.

Q: Where is the Johnson Physical Education Center?
A: It is on the corner of George and Meeting Street (30 George Street). There will be ushers and signs to direct you to the correct location inside the building.

Q: I live off-campus and will be driving into town. What time do I need to arrive on campus and where should I park?
A. Student surface parking lots will be open for your use at no charge. You should arrive on campus between 3:15 and 3:30 pm in order to find a parking place and reach the gym by seating time. Call Parking Services at 953-7834 for a listing of student lots and their locations.

Q: What should I wear?
A: You should wear "business casual" clothing appropriate to an official college activity with a presentation by a noted author.

Q: I have a disability and will need special assistance with Convocation-related activities and/or materials. Whom do I contact?
A: Contact Judy Steele in the Office of Disability Services (843) 953-1431.

Q: Who do I contact for more information?
A: Call the Office of New Student Programs (843) 953-2017 or the Office of Academic Affairs (843) 953-5527.
