User Guide

 

Main Window

 

File Menu

Open Site Image

Opens Open File dialog box for selection of image for pointcounting.

Next/Previous Site Image

Moves forward/backward through a series of images contained in the gallery (select file).

Open Data File

Opens Data directory and prompts user to select a manager file. Data file is opened in a new window and displays frames/images pointcounted and dates of analysis.

Save Coordinates

Saves randomly generated points in a text file.

 

 

Utilities Menu

Create CSV

Exports data from a comma separated value file with a format compatible with all major spreadsheets.

Generate Random Coords

Generates a new set of random points and coordinates for images without cd.dat file. Random point generator is automatically activated when opening images without cd.dat file.

Specification of image size is necessary to ensure that points are randomly distributed throughout the entire image. Default image size is 640x480 pixels.

 

 

Options Menu

Automatically Tag Images

When selected, automatically overlays points contained in cd.dat file.

Automatically Save Data

When selected, automatically updates manager and points files when a new image is loaded or when the program is exited.

Configuration

  • Sharpen Configuration: (default at 64). Adjusts configurations for 3x3, 5x5, and 7x7 convolution kernels. Kernel "strength” can be altered using the slide bar. A larger number generates a smoother sharpening algorithm.

  • Auto-Zoom Level: (default at 2). Determines the amount of zoom in or out per mouse click (1=100%).

  • Number of Random Points: (default at 10). Sets the number of points (max.=50) overlaid onto images.

  • Skin File: allows user to choose identification button menu for specific species/region.

Institution

Enter the name of your institution for inclusion in metadata.

 

 

Misc. Menu

Select All

Activates all cells in the Identification Area for blanket identification.

Add/View Comments

Displays comments dialogue. Comments can be added for an entire image or any point within the image. Output is saved to a comment file in the c:\Pointcount 99 directory. (Currently, the comment file remains separate of the csv file).

 

 

Identification Buttons

  • To identify the points overlaid on the image, click on the appropriate identification button. If unsure of the species abbreviation, place cursor over button and a yellow information box will appear with the full species name.

  • Identification buttons list both coral species and also noncoral biota likely to occur in the geographic area for which the skin file was designed. (Customized skin files for other species and regions of the world can be created upon request.)

  • The Other button is used when species/biota not listed are identified at a specific point. Options for Other are found in the pull-down menus (down arrow at far right) at the top of each section.

  • Cell(s) must be activated in order for the selected identity to appear in the cell(s).

 

 

Point Identifications

  • Identification cells are numbered according to the number of points overlaid on the image.

  • Active cells are highlighted.

  • To activate a single cell, select either the cell itself or the numbered button preceding the cell. (PointCount’99) zooms in on active point in the Image Window).

  • To activate multiple cells, click on the numbered buttons preceding the desired cells.

 

 

Image File Selection

-- Open File: opens “Open File” window for file selection.

-- Sequential Image: click for previous or next sequential image in directory. (useful for

   identification when an overlaid point is on the image edge).

-- Image In Gallery: click to proceed to previous or next image in gallery (select file).

   Select files are created using Xgallery image selection tool.

 

 

Toolbar

-- Sharpen 3x3 Convolution Kernel. See Options menu for configuration.

-- Sharpen 5x5 Convolution Kernel. See Options menu for configuration.

-- Sharpen 7x7 Convolution Kernel. See Options menu for configuration.

-- Brightness/Contrast: permits brightness/contrast adjustment for selected image.

-- Best LUT: optimizes output of look-up table to enhance brightness/contrast and color

   of image.

-- Select All: selects all points in the image for blanket identification.

-- Comment: provides text box for comments based on the entire image or a single point.

   Comments are stored in a separate text-based data file (comment file).

Image Window

 

  • PointCount’99 automatically zooms in on active point and shifts image as much as possible to center point in window.

  • To zoom in, move cursor to desired location in the image and mouse click once for each level of enlargement. Right mouse click to zoom out.
