Counseling can help you with a variety of concerns, including personal issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, or relationship problems) as well as performance problems (e.g., test-taking and time management). During your initial visit at CASAS, your concerns and the options for addressing them will be discussed. The duration and frequency of counseling depends on the goals of treatment and the severity of the problems.
Emergencies:
CASAS is staffed by professionals from the mental health fields of psychology, counseling, social work, addictions, marriage/family therapy, and psychiatry. Counselors are licensed or certified in their various disciplines. Services are intended for students currently enrolled at the College of Charleston. Treatment for severe and chronic mental disorders is not provided, but referrals may be made and other options identified.
Students may receive help from a counselor individually (one-on-one therapy), in a group led by a therapist (group counseling), or with their romantic partner (couples counseling). A counseling group is an activity where members take part in various learning experiences and share experiences with others who are in similar circumstances.
If appropriate, a referral to workshops, group counseling, psychiatric services, or community agencies may also be made. For more information, call (843) 953-5640.
