  8:00 a.m. - 9:15 a.m.

Charleston-based developer John Knott will conduct a workshop about his approach to Public and Private Partnerships for Lowcountry Development. Knott will inventory the benefits and challenges faced though public and private development partnerships. He will emphasize examples from local projects such as the Noisette Creek Project. This workshop has obvious relevance for those interested in urban planning, local politics and administration, and environmental policy, but also raises issues that are centrally important to accountability and performance of public and quasi-public agencies.

"Something New Under the Sun"

Monday

Tate Center Room 207

3:15 p.m.

The Environmental Studies Minor, the Department of History, the MES Program, and the Office of International Education and Programs are sponsoring this lecture by environmental historian John McNeill of Georgetown University. McNeill has recently published Something New Under The Sun: An Environmental History of the Twentieth-Century World (Norton, 2000) which won the World History Association book prize.

Prof. McNeill examines the relationship between the international system and the mammoth scale and scope of environmental change in modern times. The priority commanded by security, especially between 1914 and 1991, favored some paths and precluded others, helping to shape human attitudes and policies toward the natural environment. From nuclear weapons programs to population policies to the Green Revolution in agriculture, environmentally important developments bore the imprint of security considerations. Those links remain significant today.
