This orientation gives incoming MES Students a chance to meet their fellow first-year students. Additional information is provided about the MES Program, and students will have a chance to ask any questions they may have.

MESSA Elections

MESSA elections have been set. Please come support your student association by joining us in electing the 2003 MES Student Association officers on January 15th at 7:00pm. The Jessamine room in the Stern Center (4th floor) has been reserved for us from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Following elections, we will plan on moving to another location for drinks and great conversation. This is the First Annual Master of Environmental Studies Student Association (MESSA) 8K Run/Walk to preserve and improve water quality in the Charleston area. All proceeds from this race will be donated to the Friends of the Edisto, a non-profit group dedicated to maintaining and improving the water quality in the Charleston area.

MES Faculty Meeting

This will be a full (adjunct and College of Charleston) Master of Environmental Studies (MES) faculty and administration meeting. At this meeting, we will discuss curriculum assessment and further program development. The meeting will include a current student panel on recruitment and program satisfaction; all attending MES faculty will have the opportunity to pose questions for the panel's discussion.

For those not currently part of the MES faculty who would like to be (or are considering this), you are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting. If there are any questions about this meeting, please feel free to contact Dr. Angela Halfacre.

Career Preparation Workshop

Denny Ciganovic, Director of Career Services at the College of Charleston, will present MES Students with information on how to conduct a successful career search, emphasizing the tools and resources that are available.

Professor Richard Porcher of The Citadel, author of several books on the flora of South Carolina, including the recent photographic collection A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina (with co-author Professor Douglas Rayner, Wofford College). Professor Porcher will present a slideshow on "Wetlands Plants of South Carolina." Sponsored by the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences, this event will take place on the College of Charleston campus, in Science Center Room 112.

Cassandra Johnson, of the USDA Forest Service, will present results from her work in Environmental Sociology, and discuss some possible reasons for divergence in black / white visitation and affection for wildlands. Refreshments will be served.

Workshop: Politics of Biodiversity
Arnold Hall, Jewish Studies Center
3:15 - 4:45 p.m.
How much do we know about biodiversity and species extinction rates? Is there an extinction crisis? This talk considers the controversy that has surrounded the Biodiversity Bill, the National Biological Survey, and the Endangered Species Act. It attempts to offer a realistic assessment of the current situation and provide practical advice for how we might move towards a national consensus on biodiversity.

About the speaker: Ron Pulliam was Director of the National Biological Survey during the Clinton Administration and Science Advisor to Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt. He is a former President of Ecological Society of America and is currently on the Board of Directors of Defenders of Wildlife. Pulliam's research interests focus on understanding the factors involved in the maintenance of biological diversity. His teaching interests include teaching environmental literacy to undergraduates and to the general public.
