This orientation gives incoming MES Students a chance to meet their fellow first-year students. Additional information is provided about the MES Program, and students will have a chance to ask any questions they may have.

Smarth Growth and Water Quality: Informational Town Meetings in the Lowcountry.

The USES (Urbanization and Southeastern Estuarine Systems) project, in conjunction with the League of Women Voters, is sponsoring this town meeting in Charleston to facilitate a dialogue between Federal, State, and Locally elected officials, USES researchers and the public.

In order to convey the importance of estuaries to coastal community members, this meeting will focus on: what estuaries are; how estuaries are affected by urban development; what citizens can do to minimize damage to estuaries. Invited to each town meeting are the appropriate district and state legislators, citizens living within close proximity to watersheds and/or coastal waters, and USES scientists to answer questions.

Chemical Spills and Releases:
Are Communities Prepared?
  
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Attend this workshop presented by Isabelle Tapley, Esq. and learn about Emergency Preparedness and Community Right-to-Know.

You will understand how the emergency preparedness process for responses to chemical spills and releases works, and you will have a historical perspective of numerous regulatory requirements for spill reporting as well as newer requirements for spill prevention.

MES Faculty Meeting
  12:00  - 1:30 p.m.

This will be a full (adjunct and College of Charleston) Master of Environmental Studies (MES) faculty and administration meeting. The meeting will include a current student panel on recruitment and program satisfaction; all attending MES faculty will have the opportunity to pose questions for the panel's discussion.

For those not currently part of the MES faculty who would like to be (or are considering this), you are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting. If there are any questions about this meeting, please feel free to contact Dr. Angela Halfacre.

Federal Register Workshop

At this workshop, presented by Isabelle Tapley, you will learn how to use the Federal Register to stay current on environmental rules and policy. The material will be presented using specific examples referencing Environmental Rules and Issues to explain how information is presented in the Federal Register and how you can access it. MESSA 8K for H2O

This is the Second Annual Master of Environmental Studies Student Association (MESSA) 8K Run/Walk to preserve and improve water quality in the Charleston area. All proceeds from this race will be donated to the Lowcountry Earth Force and their Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN) program. This program provides elementary through high school-aged youth with the skills, knowledge, and resources to preserve and improve the quality of rivers, creeks, and streams that flow into the Charleston Harbor and ocean.
