Calit2 is involved in a wide variety of projects to bring novel emerging concepts in cyberinfrastructure (CI) into ocean observing. NSF has funded Calit2, SIO, and partners to develop a general CI for the Ocean Observing Initiative. As preparation for this, we have been working with University of Washington on regional cabled observatories, the NSF Long Term Ecological Research coral reef site in French Polynesia, the Southern California Ocean Observing System, and the Coral Reef Environmental Observatory Network (CREON). Each of these allows us to prototype new approaches to “wet” and “dry” components of an ocean observatory. Examples of these prototypes will be discussed and future directions described.
