Aquarium Room
The Aquarium Room, Room 107, is designated for holding living organisms for teaching and research by faculty, staff, and students of the College of Charleston.
- Everything (i.e., live animals, equipment, aquariums, etc.) coming into or going out of the Aquarium Room must be checked through the Laboratory Manager. If no one is available to check out equipment, there are check-out sheets posted to the right of the door to the room. Please fill in the required information and put it in the lab manager’s mailbox. Return the equipment when you are finished with it and notify the lab manager.
- No preservatives (formalin, alcohol, or other) or preserved specimens are to be brought into the Aquarium Room. It is for living organisms only.
- All equipment is to be completely cleaned, dried, and put in its proper place immediately upon termination of research.
- All glassware and other items used must be returned clean to their proper location.
- Filling the seawater holding tanks is to be done only by the Laboratory Manager. Please notify the Laboratory Manager when the users’ tank is low or if large volumes of seawater are needed.
- The door to the Aquarium Room is to be left unlocked at all times.
- The Aquarium Room lights are operated on a timer. Please see the Laboratory Manager for details about the lighting schedule.
- Do NOT wash sand or any kind of sediments down the drain in the main sink or the floor drains.
- Label aquariums and tanks so that others will not disturb projects. Labels are provided to the right of the door. Please note, that IACUC approval is required for use of non-human vertebrate animals in teaching or research. The approval number must be posted on the labels along with contact information.
- Do not disturb aquariums, tanks, and other equipment being used. Do not tie into air or water systems or feed any animals without approval from the individual researcher or the Laboratory Manager.
- Do not set up any aquariums unless you intend to maintain them. Animals need to be fed on a regular basis. Dead organisms must be removed immediately and disposed of properly. DO NOT place dead organisms in the trash container in the aquarium room. In general, dead animals are to be placed in plastic trash bags, tied closed, and thrown into the dumpster outside. If you will be out of town and cannot maintain your aquariums, make sure someone reliable will do it for you.
Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in revocation of Wet Lab privileges.
