Internship Program

Internship Information

First, and foremost, it is imperative for you to decide whether you are planning on doing a "for-credit" internship or a "not-for-credit" internship. If you are doing the former, you must first approach a faculty within your department who is willing to be involved. This individual will provide the mentoring, requirements, and the final evaluation. Your department should also have a variety of forms that must be completed prior to beginning an internship for credit. Additionally, because it is for credit, you must be aware of the college's Course Registration and Drop/Add periods.

If your internship is purely experiential (i.e. "not-for-credit") the necessary forms can be found on this website by linking to the "Student Information" page. Learning Contracts and Assessment tools are available and must be filled out and returned to the Office of Internship Programs.

Requirements

On average, nationally, students are required to complete 120 hours of service during an internship experience (credit or non-credit based). Many departments at the College of Charleston follow this pattern. In an "for-credit" experience, you may find additional requirements as determined by your department. These could include, but may not be limited to, weekly journals, a reflective paper, and a final project that culls together your learning experiences. Be sure to check with your sponsoring professor to ensure that you know what has to be completed and what will be evaluated for final grading purposes.

If you are completing a "not-for-credit" internship, be ready to complete 120 hours of service over the semester (approximately 8 hours per week), complete a mid-semester and final assessments of the internship, include a self-assessment, and complete a short (2 pages) reflective essay on the learning experience. Transcript notation is available for those individuals who request it at the start of the internship.

One Last Thing

Please remember that you are an ambassador for the College of Charleston and its student body. Your actions will reflect how the community, outside agencies, and international settings view our school and students. Be prompt, courteous, attentive, and reflect the positive skills that our college generates with its students.
