Dear Student, Congratulations on choosing to complete an internship during your time at the College of Charleston. Out-of-class experiences form a major part of a studentŐs personal and social development throughout his or her college years. Internships are included in this setting and complement the academic experience much like such college-specific opportunities as membership in pre-professional organizations, study abroad, community service, and undergraduate research experiences. An internship will provide you the chance to learn by doing in a setting most closely related to the actual work environment you will encounter as a professional. Students working as interns have the opportunity to be mentored by a workplace employee who can provide assistance and personal knowledge in attaining personal learning goals. Additionally, a recent national survey of colleges and employers found that 38% of interns went on to full-time jobs with their employers. This is a chance for you to begin a relationship that may prove valuable after college. During the internship process please remember that you are ambassadors for the College of Charleston. Your actions, work effort, and overall experience will be judged. Future internship opportunities depend on your success. Also, keep in mind that you will be assessed by your site supervisor who will forward a report to your faculty mentor which will be reflective of your overall grade in this for-credit opportunity. Prior to the internship starting, take the time to find out the company's rules on dress, internal policies, and any additional information you think will help you be a successful intern. Remember, you will get out of the experience what you put into the experience! In working toward successfully initiating an outstanding internship opportunity that is beneficial for you, it is my office's role to provide the necessary support. Please do not hesitate to contact me via phone or email if there is something that I can help you with.
