School 1972 voted ......"Most
likely to lead a student revolution."
I am a transplanted Jersey
girl, married to a Michigander. After attending nursing school and raising 3
little boys, I started college in my late 20's. I graduated from the College of Charleston in 1989 with a BA in
Chemistry, a BS in Physics and a minor in Math. Following my military husband
to Great Lakes, Illinois,
I completed a PhD in Physics at Illinois Institute of Technology with
Professor Leonard I. Grossweiner. While I was a graduate student, I worked as
a laser technician at Wenske
Laser Center
where I was able to do my dissertation research and participate in Laser Workshops
and clinical photodynamic therapy trials. After a post doc in Pediatrics
Hematology/Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, I joined the Physics
and Astronomy faculty at the College
of Charleston in 1996.
Don't miss the ice and snow too much but I do miss the fireflies.
Current Interests
I am a member of the College's Health Professions Committee, I serve as the College of Charleston councillor for ORAU (Oak
Ridge Associated Universities) and I helped to create the College's IACUC. I
was elected to the Physics and Astronomy Division of the Council on
Undergraduate Research (CUR). I have an active interest in the revitalization
of undergraduate physics education and participate enthusiastically in
undergraduate biophysics research. My long-term goals include the development
of a physics degree for pre-health sciences students and the establishment of
an interdisciplinary research program in the photosciences. I like to play
the djembe, and organized an African drum group last year at the College. We
should do that again...it was fun. I have a fabulous collection of Muffy
Vanderbears with no end in sight. I was elected president of the American Society for Photobiology (2007-2008). The organization includes photobiology, photochemistry and photophysics.
