History and Literature of the Theatre 1 Web Links

The following links have been chosen for their images. Use them to further your understanding of what theatres, etc. throughout history looked like. Most likely questions I pose on nicenet will often revolve around images shown here. Check here on a weekly basis, I'll add appropriate links as we move from topic to topic.

And if you run into any terrific links while browsing, let me know. You can easily post the URL on nicenet. If you're using web links as sources for your papers (be selective please, a paper written entirely off of the web will not be well received), make sure to go to the links below about reviewing and citing online sources. Just because it's published (on the net or anywhere) doesn't necessarily make it so!

Restoration/18th century England
A good chronology of the time period, with some interesting facts.

This site has texts, but also some terrific sketches of theatres.

Neoclassical Theatre
The homepage of the Comedie Francaise - in french.
Ceski Krumlov castle - the video of the scenery on this page is amazing.

Elizabethan Theatre
The Elizabethan Theatre - follow the links on the left for interesting pics.
Shakespeare's Globe Research Database - more interesting than it sounds.
Shakespeare's Globe Center (USA)

This online lecture is simple, straightforward, and has great pictures.

Shenandoah Shakespeare - they've built a replica of Blackfriar's Theatre.

Renaissance Theatre
Renaissance scenic spectacle - check out the animations.
Teatro Olympico in Vicenza - it's in Italian, but has great pictures.

A good Commedia page.
Drottningholm Theatre - this theatre still exists, and is a great example of Renaissance technology. The history page has a couple of good pictures.
Austin Commedia Troupe - this is a page of modern scenarios and lazzi. They are new but they are structured just like the originals.
Antonio Fava makes commedia masks. Take a look at them.

Beijing Opera page - go to the arias page and listen to a couple.

Roman Theatre
A List of Roman Festivals - and you thought you knew how to party.
Map of the Roman Empire, 120 A.D
This is about the coolest thing ever. A scale model of ancient Rome. If you click on "Thematic Visit" you can look at all the theatres, etc.

Find out about both temporary and permanent Roman theatres at Didaskalia.
Check out the model of the Theatre of Pompey at the Theatron site. You might also look at the Greek theatre models.
