Undergraduate Research:

The work in my lab is centered around using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model system for understanding Human neurological disease.  Presently, my lab focuses on understanding the function of genes involved in Batten Disease (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis) and Tuberous Sclerosis. I am very interested in getting undergraduates involved in original primary research through their courses (Biol212L) and in my lab as independent research students.  One of my main goals is to have my students present their work at regional and national meetings.  As part of this goal, I am working toward increasing the visibilty of undergraduate science done at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions in the Drosophila and neuroscience community.

Research Funding

The work in the Korey lab would not be possible if it were not for the support of the College, private foundations and the federal government.  The lab is presently funded by grants from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH-NICHD Grant# R15 HD052362) and the NIH South Carolina- INBRE program (Grant#P20 RR16461).  In the past we have been supported by the SOMAS Program (NSF DUE#0426266), the Batten Disease Support and Research Association (BDSRA), the NIH South Carolina-BRIN program, the Department of Biology, and the College of Charleston's Summer Undergraduate Research program (SURF).
