One of the most charismatic and influential politicians of his day, L. Mendel Rivers  represented the First Congressional District of South Carolina, for nearly thirty years.  (1941 until his death in December of 1970.)  As Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee during the Vietnam War, he was one of the most influential congressmen in Washington, D.C. while priding himself as a champion of the ordinary service man.

Join his daughter Peg Eastman, for a discussion the unique origins of this new biography which provides an authentic and charming glimpse into the cultures of old Charleston and the global arena of Washington politics. Following Mrs. Eastman’s talk about how the book came to be, historian John White will highlight some of the Congressman Rivers’s accomplishments and report on current efforts to preserve the L. Mendel Rivers Papers at the College of Charleston.

Lecture is free and open to the public.  There will be a reception and book signing following the event.
