Documentary Film: “THIRST” (2004)

Co-Presenters: PROF. TIM CALLAHAN, Geology and Environmental Geosciences, and BRAD REED, President and CEO of Water Missions International (WMI). WMI is a local activist organization that provides clean water technologies for people in developing countries and disaster areas.

Every individual’s life and health is dependent upon having an adequate supply of clean water. Yet 2.6 billion people lack access to this basic resource, according to a 2006 U.N. report. While water shortage is reaching an epidemic global crisis, multi-national corporations are increasingly treating water as a commodity to be bought and sold. Is water a basic human right? Following the film, Prof. Tim Callahan will discuss the international politics and policies of water resources. The WMI representative will talk about the work of this Charleston-based organization in providing water treatment technology for developing regions around the world.

The Building Locations: The Addlestone Library (205 Calhoun Street) is on the SW corner of Calhoun and Coming Streets. Maybank Hall is on the SW corner of Calhoun and St. Philip Streets. The Robert Scott Small building faces it on the W. The latter can be accessed by entering the college entrance gates on Calhoun acress from Starbucks on Calhoun Street (see the cougar sculpture). The RSS Building is pink stucco - the auditorium is on the left after you go up the front steps. An elevator for the disabled can be accessed in the back of the building near Calhoun. The Cistern is at the front of Randolph Hall - that stately old building with a big lawn of oak trees - on the NW corner of George and St. Philip Streets, across from the College Cafeteria.
