Bank of America Donates Rare Book to Addlestone Library Special CollectionsBank of America has donated An Account of the Weather and Diseases of South Carolina, by Dr. Lionel Chalmers, to Special Collections of the Addlestone Library at the College of Charleston. The book, a 1776 first edition in handsome period style binding, begins with an account of the climate, water and soil of South Carolina. The book also contains a brief introduction to the medical history of the South Carolina colony and an essay on the effects of hot and moist air on the human body. The remainder of the book is devoted to various diseases of South Carolina with considerable attention to the illnesses of children. Lionel Chalmers, a native of Scotland who immigrated to South Carolina early in life, was the closest physician to a pediatric specialty in the American colonial period. Chalmers Street, which runs between Meeting and State Streets, is named after him. For more information about the Friends of the Library, click here
