Reference Outreach Librarian

Under the supervision of the Head, Reference Services, the Reference Outreach Librarian provides leadership for creating new service points and methods of delivery to students and student groups. The librarian is responsible for coordinating and conducting new student orientation. The librarian is also responsible for developing promotional activities and materials that support outreach services. Working with other reference librarians this librarian also provides reference service, assistance in the computer lab, research consultations, and virtual reference. As part of the reference team, the librarian participates in all instructional activities including Library 105, specialized lectured, and participating in the First Year Experience program. The Reference Outreach Librarian reports to the Head, Reference Services.

Responsibilities and Duties: 

Reference Services

  • Provides reference service for specific hours including some nights and weekends
  • Instructs patrons in the use of the online catalog, subscription databases, and the Web
  • Advises and assists patrons with the reference, general, and periodical collections both print and online
  • Assists patrons with the equipment necessary to make full use of these collections
  • Conducts research consultations with students by appointment
  • Assists in answering e-mail/instant messaging/Text questions as needed

Outreach to Students and Student Organizations

  • Under the supervision of the Head, Reference Services, cultivates and develops new service points and methods of delivery to students and student groups at locations outside the typical library setting such as student centers, dormitories, etc.
  • Coordinates and conducts new student orientation efforts including library tours, Infofair participation and programs for Welcome Week
  • Develops resources webpage for Convocation book and author
  • Generates and implements activities and materials that promote research and information services outside the library

Bibliographic Instruction 

  • Teaches sections of Library 105 as required
  • Performs specialized lectures for various classes
  • Participates in the First Year Experience program
  • Creates library instructional materials, web pages, tutorials, etc. using the appropriate software

Library and College Affairs

  • Serves as a library liaison to academic departments consulting with the appropriate faculty to select new books and journals for the library’s collection
  • Undertakes research and/or professional development related to professional and scholarly interests
  • Serves on library, college and professional committees, elected and assigned

Requirements:

  • ALA-accredited Master of Library Science
  • Demonstrated understanding of library technology and the electronic resources environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to manage time and projects in a dynamic environment;
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in the application of new technologies;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Salary:

Minimum starting salary: $40,000

Benefits:

The position is full time, tenure track, eleven-month appointment. Benefits: State holidays (approximately 12 per year), paid sick leave (ten hours/month), contribution towards moving expenses, health insurance, dental insurance, optional 401K, 457 and 403B supplemental retirement accounts, and a variety of optional insurance plans including Long Term Disability and Long Term Care.
