How To Find BooksIf you are having a problem finding books, it may be because you are not accustomed to the basic call number arrangement. Materials at the College of Charleston are cataloged and filed according to the Library of Congress system. Each item has a call number that begins with a letter and is then followed by some numbers. The letters at the beginning of each call number correspond with a particular subject. For instance, books with call numbers beginning with the letter D deal with European history, those beginning with the letter M deal with music, and those beginning with the letter P deal with literature. The numbers that follow the first letter(s) further specifies the subject area. The next part of the call number is a letter-decimal combination designating the author and title of the book. But beware! The decimal is not printed as part of the call number! Even though the decimal is not printed in the call number on the spine of the book, you must think of the number that follows the second letter as a decimal. Therefore, J235 would precede J89. Finally, a copyright date is often included in the call number to distinguish different editions of the same book. The following call numbers are arranged in correct order by the Library of Congress classification system:
Now that you know all about the Library of Congress classification and filing system, you need to learn only one simple rule for finding books in the C of C Stacks:
Is the book you want listed as available but not on the shelf? Please email Michael Sprankle. Do you need a book that the library does not own? Please see Interlibrary Loan Services. Still need help? Ask a reference librarian for help (843.953.8000) or click email a reference librarian. |
