Long Range Planning Coordinating Committee
Meeting Notes from November 9, 1998
The Decision Framework
Key Elements of the Strategic Vision
Basic Mission: basic purposes of the Enterprise and Guiding Principles for Behavior. (most critical)
Clientele: target audiences of the Institution (who are we here to serve?)
Program/Service Mix: program offerings and the priorities of the Institution. (most sensitive part)
Comparative Advantage: competitive position to be established by the Institution.
Objectives: what the organization must accomplish in order to move from the existing state to the desired state of affairs. (move from the strategic to the operational, involves clientele)
Strategic Analysis Paradigm
We need to become well informed of all 3 areas to work on the "matching" process.
A. External Environment:
- Pick the top 10 forces in each of the 3 categories (what are the forces, opportunities, threats, and implications of CofC from those forces)
- A one-page report per force (minimize paperwork)
Organizationally:

Each of the 3 subgroups will be chaired by a LRPC member. Members of the CofC community and Charleston community will serve on the subgroups. It is important to bring in people with expertise as soon as possible. One method is to hold an open workshop for the entire campus. The LRPC will still need to define subgroups then solicit people to staff the groups.
The main question is "What might we do?"
B. Strengths and Weaknesses:
Identify the top 5 strengths and weaknesses of each group.
The main question is "What can we do?"
C. Values:
The main question is "What do we want to do?"
