Technology Working Group
Meeting Notes from April 10, 1999
Present: Marcia Moore, Victor Burrell, David Gentry, Andy Abrams (Chair), Virginia Friedman, Chris Starr, Sissy Ehrhardt, Linda Bradley
Sissy Ehrhardt suggested that there be no Saturday meetings of the committee. Friday mornings were determined to be the tentative meeting time.
Resources for strategic planning in reference to technology were identified as including the following:
Sissy's assessment tool determines technology skills in a discrete, quantitative way. To determine student expectations and expertise (as per goals of the committee), there will logically need to be a survey.
The issue of student-owned computers was discussed. At this time, there is no requirement for CofC students. Instead, there is a soft mandate: a recommended level of purchase.
Various methods of dividing up the labor were discussed. We need methodologies for collecting information, resources identified, communication channels established, feedback mechanisms, and a way to research the market on computer needs by employers. We need to study the external trends, forces, opportunities, and threats.
Chris Starr urged us to focus on a plan for moving forward. This plan should identify the goals, define our task (deliver knowledge base), execution (process for delivering the knowledge base), and delivery (structure and presentation of our knowledge base). He proposed that a paid student secretary to take the minutes be the first request.
The committee decided to add another task to our goal-faculty development for training and research/scholarship. We will re-define our focus to include information technology. The committee determined that we should examine the current environment, projections into the future, and a reasonable goal for the College. Thus our task will include:
By the end of May, we will have identified and assigned the various tasks. This will take up to three meetings. The research will be ongoing over the summer, and in the fall we will implement our plans.
Other resources we will need include funds for a student secretary, fees for consultants/experts, and survey costs.
