The 2008 SPECTRA Summer Pre-College Program
The Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services invites accepted students to participate in the 2008 SPECTRA summer pre-college program; one of CofC’s finest,
long-standing, retention programs for first year students.
What is SPECTRA? SPECTRA is a unique and extremely challenging summer residential program available to incoming minority and/or first-generation college students attending CofC full-time in the fall.
The program is designed to
- assist you in making a smooth transition from high school to college
- give you the advantage of starting your college career early
- give you the opportunity to take 2 summer classes (that count towards your graduation)
- give you the opportunity to live on campus
- afford you the opportunity to create a campus network of students, counselors, faculty and staff.
Campus research indicates that SPECTRA participants have consistently had more meaningful college experiences, both academically and socially, than their non-SPECTRA peers. This network will be your support system in the summer and when you return to campus in the fall.

SPECTRA participants are required to live on campus during the entire program.
The SPECTRA program is filled on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Only the first 100 students who successfully complete the application process will be accepted to this program.
To be eligible for SPECTRA:
- You must be accepted by the College of Charleston for Fall 2008.
- Your enrollment confirmation fee of $100 (on-campus housing not needed) or $300 (on-campus housing needed) should be paid to the Office of Admissions by the required deadline. The entire sum has to be paid at one time. If you have questions regarding payment of your enrollment confirmation fee, contact the Office of Admissions at 843-953-5670. Without paying your enrollment confirmation fee, you are not eligible to participate in the SPECTRA program.
- You must attend one of the New Student Orientations before July 7th, 2008.

You will receive registration information from New Student Programs after your enrollment confirmation fee has been paid to the Office of Admissions. Attending the New Student Orientation, you will have an opportunity to learn about the campus, meet other in-coming students, discuss academic goals with an advisor, and register for fall courses.
- You must return all components of the SPECTRA application. All SPECTRA applications must be postmarked by June 1, 2008. No exceptions!
