About the Workshop
The incorporation of peer education in the first-year experience is growing nationwide. The influence that peers have on one another, especially when first-year students are influenced by well-trained role models, can help to ease students’ transitions from high school to college.

The College of Charleston’s Offices of New Student Programs and the First-Year Experience welcome peer educators and their cooperating staff/faculty to attend a drive-in workshop on September 6, 2008, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Keynote Address

A keynote address will be presented by Dan Friedman. Dan Friedman is the Director of University 101 programs at the University of South Carolina, where he is responsible for over 170 sections of the first-year seminar, as well a sophomore and senior seminar. Prior to this position, Friedman served as Director of Freshman Seminar and Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Appalachian State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Virginia and holds an M.A. and Ed.S. in Higher Education from Appalachian State.

Dr. Friedman’s area of research is centered on the First-Year Experience and he has made numerous presentations and published several articles or monograph contributions on this topic.  Dan has conducted a wide-range of assessment initiatives aimed at better understanding the efficacy of the first-year seminar.

Dr. Friedman has served as an invited faculty of the Summer Institute on First-Year Assessment and for the Institute on First-Year Seminar Leadership, both sponsored by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition.  He has also served as a faculty member and practicum advisor for the Kellogg Institute on Developmental Education and on a SACS Accreditation Team as the Lead Reviewer of a Quality Enhancement Plan focused on learning communities and a first-year seminar.

Content Sessions
We invite proposal submissions for concurrent sessions, panel discussions, and roundtable discussions on topics related to using peer education to enhance the first year experience. This workshop is designed specifically for attendance by peer educators who want to learn from other peer educators along with experts in the field of peer education. We encourage those students to submit proposals. Additionally, we invite other key players (faculty who work with and staff who supervise peer educators) to submit proposals. Possible presentation topics are, but are not limited to, the following:

  • best practices in peer education
  • trends in peer education
  • understanding and serving the millennial student
  • millennials leading millennials
  • diversity programming in the first-year
  • student engagement
  • student accountability
  • programming ideas, activities, and icebreakers
  • supervisory tips for training, motivating, and sustaining a peer education program
  • panel of faculty who have worked with peer educators
