S.T.E.P. Workshop
Overview of the S.T.E.P. Workshop

The S.T.E.P. (Successful Transitions through Educational Planning) Workshop has been designed to ensure your successful return to the College of Charleston. As a S.T.E.P. student, you are required to participate in this special program that has been outlined by the Admissions Office. The workshop will cover the specific requirements of the S.T.E.P. Program in depth, and will provide you with the opportunity to register for fall classes before registration begins for remaining incoming students. This is the only time you will be allowed to register for classes before they begin next semester.

You are expected to be in attendance from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m. If you do not attend you will be denied admission for the upcoming semester. If you cannot attend the workshop, you must call Undergraduate Academic Services in advance at (843) 953-5674.

Upcoming S.T.E.P. Workshop

The S.T.E.P. Workshop for students returning to the College of Charleston for the Fall 2008 semester will be held on August 1, 2008 from approximately 8:30 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

Attendance is required for you to begin classes for the upcoming semester. This workshop will not only help answer many of your questions about the STEP Program, but will be your only opportunity to register for fall semester classes. A hold is placed on your record to prevent registration prior to the workshop date. If you do not attend, you will be denied admission for Fall 2008.

If you are unable to attend the workshop and you plan to defer your return to the College of Charleston until the spring 2009 semester, you must contact the Director of Undergraduate Academic Services at 843-953-5674.

How to Register for the S.T.E.P. Workshop
A postcard with registration instructions will be sent to you by the Office of New Student Programs. Students should follow the registgration instructions as soon as possible to guarantee a space in the workshop.
Special Needs Students

If you have special needs because of a disability, please call our office at (843) 953-2017 so we can make appropriate arrangements. For more information about services available to you at the College, contact the at Center for Disability Services at (843) 953-1431.

What to Expect at the S.T.E.P. Workshop

You will check in at 8 am in the Education Center lobby. The STEP Workshop will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. Students who arrive after the designated check-in time will not be permitted to enter the workshop, and must then defer their readmission until the following regular semester.

From 8:30 a.m. until approximately 11:45 a.m. you will learn about the potential obstacles to success, review your academic transcript, discuss time management issues, and hear from representatives from Undergraduate Academic Services office, the Center for Student Learning, and the Career Center.

You will also hear details about Learning Strategies (EDLS 100), a course that all readmitted students are required to take to help develop efficient and effective life and study strategies. You are free for lunch from approximately 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. At 1:15 you will return to the room to sign a contract with the Director of Undergraduate Academice Services that outlines the conditions you must meet during the semester. This contract is kept in your academic file in the Undergraduate Academic Services office.

From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. you will meet with an academic advisor and register for fall courses. Advising appointments may take anywhere from one to two hours depending on your course selections.

Additional Information for Workshop Participants

Parking Information

College of Charleston parking spaces are assigned and paid for each semester in advance.  Your parking lot selection priority is based on the number of cumulative credit hours you have earned and have on file with the Office of the Registrar.  Student parking fees range from $200 to $450 per semester.

Parking applications for the Fall 2008 semester will be available online via Cougar Trail in the spring.  Please check the parking services website for the official begin and end dates for parking sign up at www.cofc.edu/~parking/

Students living on-campus with less than thirty (30) cumulative credit hours earned are not eligible for on-campus parking.   If you would like to have an application mailed to you, please call Parking Services at 843-953-7834.

Eligible students who miss the application deadline date may go to Parking Services located on the sidewalk level of the Joe E. Berry Residence hall on Calhoun Street  to purchase a permit.  Check your CofC Edisto email account for the specific date.

Information regarding  alternate parking sites can be found at http://www.cofc.edu/auxiliaryservices/parking/AlternateParking1.htm.

Tuition and Bill Payment Information

A bill will be available after you register for classes on Cougar Trail at the Treasurer’s Office or online.

Tuition bills will vary from student to student depending on individual course selection, housing arrangements, participation in various activities or labs, and other factors.

Failure to pay the entire balance due by the due date will result in the cancellation of your course registration schedule.  Therefore payment is critical for this and all upcoming semesters.  All bill payment is done online through Ebill on Cougar Trail.

In order to avoid being dropped for non payment, it is essential that your bill be handled in a timely fashion.  Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  1. Complete your financial aid application and provide documents to the Office of Financial Assistance well in advance of the upcoming semester.

  2. If any person other than the student is paying the bill, we strongly advise adding this person’s email address as an Authorized User to the E-Billing system.

  3. The Edisto email address provided to each student is the main communication tool between the College and the student.  Please check this email account often for official College notifications.

  4. A payment plan through the Treasurer’s Office can break down the bill into four payments.  Enroll in the payment plan early; payments must be received by the due dates indicated.  The Treasurer’s Office website (www.treasurer.cofc.edu) provides more information on payment. After you register, it is important to validate your enrollment through Cougar Trail. You must validate your enrollment to receive financial aid refund checks and have access to campus resources such as the library.
