Textbook: Biology. Concepts and Connections, Third Edition, 2000, by Neil A. Campbell, Lawrence G. Mitchell, Jane B. Reece.

A tentative LECTURE SEQUENCE is attached. You should make an effort to read the corresponding textbook material before the material is covered in class.

ATTENDANCE at all lectures is expected; roll will be taken periodically. An excessive number of unexcused absences will effect your final grade. Make every effort to be on time to lectures. Please do not use CELL PHONES during class.

The deadline for WITHDRAWAL from the course with a grade of "W" is October 2. Refer to the Undergraduate Bulletin for conditions for withdrawal after that date.

All students are expected to abide by THE HONOR SYSTEM OF THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON.

GRADING POLICY. There will be four (4) full period TESTS throughout the semester and a final exam. Please plan to bring a No. 2 pencil and eraser on test days as tests will be taken on scannable test sheets. Tests will be based on lectures, textbook reading and any additional assigned reading. Tests will be announced a week in advance. Each test is worth 20% of the final grade. Tests will be reviewed in class but must be returned and will be kept on file by me. Tests which are not returned will be given an "F" regardless of the original grade.

QUIZZES will be given weekly in the class. They will be announced the class period prior to the quiz. The QUIZ AVERAGE is equivalent to one test (20% of the final grade).

The FINAL EXAMINATION will be cumulative and is worth 20% of the final grade. The exam time scheduled for this class is December 6, 12-3 p.m.

Of all grades given for TESTS, QUIZZES (Avg.), and the FINAL EXAM, the lowest grade will be dropped. No make-up tests or quizzes will be given. If a test is missed, that will be the low grade that is dropped. Likewise, if all tests and quizzes are completed and result in an average acceptable to the student, then a student may miss the FINAL EXAM and that will be the low grade that is dropped.

GRADING SCALE: GRADE BREAKDOWN:

90-100% A Superior 80% Tests (20% each)

86-89.9% B+ Very Good 20% Final Exam

80-85.9% B Good 20% Quizzes

76-79.9% C+ Fair (Lowest grade is dropped)

70-75.9% C Acceptable

65-69.9% D Barely Acceptable

<65% F Unacceptable
