Baseball, Mythology, and the Meaning of Life
This course will examine a series of American myths: the myth of baseball and America as a melting pot, the myth of the hero, and the myth of baseball as national pastime. These myths will serve as the foundation for the exploration of critical societal issues such as race, gender, immigration/assimilation, and religion/morality, and the role that American institutions such as the media and the political system have played in each of these issues. The course will explore these myths from the perspectives of how they are developed, what is their life cycle (i.e., creation, perpetuation, erosion), and why they are relevant today.
