DEPARTMENT CHAIR
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE
The Department of Health and Human Performance in the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance at the College of Charleston seeks a strong and dynamic leader for the position of Department Chair. We are seeking candidates who hold an earned doctorate in one of the disciplines within the department from a regionally accredited university and who are eligible for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor with tenure negotiable depending on experience and credentials. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and service. Administrative experience, understanding of fiscal management in higher education, a record of success in curriculum development, familiarity with external accrediting processes, a record of success in obtaining external support for scholarly activities, and experience working with diverse populations are highly desired qualifications. Experience in programs similar to that of the Department of Health and Human Performance at the College of Charleston is preferred. Duties include serving as administrative leader and representative for the department, evaluating faculty and staff, making budgetary decisions for the department, maintaining a record of scholarship, and teaching in the area(s) of expertise.
The Department of Health and Human Performance offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Athletic Training and in Physical Education. The Physical Education degree has concentrations in exercise science, health promotion, and teacher education. The Athletic Training Education Program is nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and the Physical Education Teacher Education Program is nationally accredited through the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The department also offers a minor in health.

This is an eleven-month appointment; salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR
As an integral link between members of academic departments and the
Dean of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance; chairs are responsible for the development
and management of the academic departments. Their primary responsibility
is to promote excellence in teaching, research, and service of their
faculties. Department chairs provide leadership in their department’s
development of goals, annual objectives, and curricular and staffing
plans. The appointment of the chairs is for one year. There is no
minimum or maximum term limit.
The department chair’s specific functions include:
• recommend faculty appointment, reappointment, tenure, promotion,
termination, and dismissal;
• annually evaluate each member of the department’s faculty
and staff;
• conduct searches for new faculty which conform to Affirmative
Action policies and procedures;
• allocate funds from instructional and other departmental budgets;
• develop and monitor budgets;
• conduct regular departmental meetings;
• supervise the department’s program of instruction, including
scheduling, faculty workload, and advising students;
• promote faculty development and recommend application for
professional travel and sabbatical leave;
• provide support and orientation for new members of the departments;
• hear informal faculty and student grievances;
• carry out other such duties as shall be assigned by the Dean
or as set down in College policy and departmental bylaws;
• appoint and supervise graduate program directors where applicable.
As faculty members, department chairs continue to teach, engage in
scholarly research, writing and related professional growth activities,
and provide service to the College and community. The extent of this
effort shall be negotiated each year with the Dean. The chair is evaluated
annually by the Dean with input from faculty, as prescribed by the
Provost.
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON
Assistant/Associate Professor, Physical Education with specialty in Pedagogy/Motor Learning: Tenure track position beginning August 2008. Responsibilities: teach in undergraduate physical education program with concentrations in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, and Teacher Education. Conduct independent and student mentored research in the discipline leading to publications in refereed journals. Pursue internal and external funding to support and enhance teaching and research activities. Advise student majors, take a leadership role in the NASPE/NCATE accreditation process and serve on various committees as assigned. Teaching assignments may include: Introduction to physical education, Elementary physical education methods, Individual and team skill method courses, a Dance and rhythms course and Motor Learning. Qualifications: earned doctorate in Physical Education or related area with specialization in Pedagogy/Motor Learning and a minimum of 3 years teaching in P-12 schools. Demonstration of excellent teaching skills is required as part of the interview process. Demonstrated ability to work productively with students and colleagues is required. Preference will be given to candidates with college teaching experience and those demonstrating familiarity with NCATE, a broad range of continuous assessment techniques, the use of instructional technology in the teaching-learning process, and the role of faculty in student success, recruitment, and retention. Salary: Commensurate with experience.
