Welcome to the Physical Plant Website

This site is an exciting first for us and we hope that you find the information here helpful. Our department is here to serve the college community and we are always looking for ways to improve that service.

One of our goals is to improve communication with our College of Charleston colleagues. We’ve made changes recently to enhance communication and response and we will continue to make these priorities. This website is one part of that endeavor.

The site enables you to learn about what we do and how our work force is structured. We’ve posted a section on Emergency Procedures and a Frequently Asked Questions page. Because many of you have asked which of our services are chargeable and which are non-chargeable, we have included an entire section on this issue.

The Maintenance Direct section describes our online work order system. Please read this carefully as it provides the information necessary to submit requests for routine, non-chargeable maintenance services.

If you have any questions or suggestions about our website, please call our Maintenance Support Center helpdesk at 953-5550.

The Physical Plant: An Overview

The Physical Plant is responsible for the construction, renovation, operation, repair, and preventive and routine maintenance of over 100 facilities and extensive grounds of the College of Charleston. Residence Life and Housing is responsible for all College dormitories.

The Physical Plant consists of over 200 employees and is located at 133 Calhoun Street across from Marion Square. Department personnel keep all operating systems in good repair; make the campus a comfortable, safe and attractive place to learn, live, work, and play; and respond quickly to the emergency repair needs of the campus community.

Additional services are available through Physical Plant to assist with non-routine building maintenance. Such services include moving furniture; delivering, setting up, and removing tables and chairs for special events; construction of cabinets/shelves etc., installation of new light fixtures, ceiling fans, and hanging pictures & bulletin boards.

Physical Plant charges labor and materials for these additional services. Additional services are billed to the requesting department’s budget and are contracted out if necessary. Requests for additional services should be submitted on an Intra Department Transfer (IDT) and completed with the department’s appropriate accounting information. The requests should be submitted in ample time to allow coordination, equipment rental, or contracting of services when required.
