Hints and Tips for Poster Session Presenters

The Scenario

Presenters at the Poster Session are allocated a space, usually either one side of a free-standing poster board, or wall space. Plan on having roughly a 4 foot tall by 6 foot wide space, but presenters will rarely use that much space.

The session officially runs from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Friday, 20 April here in the Science Center. We like you to have your poster on display by 10:00am, so that more casual viewers will get to see them. You will also need to be present a significant portion of the time between 1:00 - 3:00 to answer questions.

Tips

The term "posters" is actually a misnomer. They can be prepared on single sheets of standard sized paper, or on special large sizes. You can post individual sheets, or have them pre-posted on an actual poster board. The essence is that you

Communicate with a diverse audience!

In general you:

Use very large type (perhaps 24 point)
Don't have a lot of dense text
Do use pictures, graphs, and charts
Clearly state your motivation and results
Have it visually appealing, but not distractingly so

Remember your audience! They are diverse, and not generally expert in your field.
