Colloquium

The Wonderful Universe of Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries

Dr. Adrienne Juett
NASA, Goddard Space Flight Center

Thursday, March 27, 2008, 1:40 p.m., SCIC 126

I will present recent results from X-ray observations of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs).  These systems are the most extreme environments in the universe and can probe general relativity, accretion theory, and star formation history.  I will discuss recent results from the high-resolution spectral observations of Galactic LMXBs that have been used to study the interstellar medium of the Milky Way.  I will also present observations of LMXBs in nearby early-type galaxies which provide constraints on the formation and evolution of LMXBs.  Finally, I will discuss the prospects for continued studies of the emission processes, environments, and formation mechanisms of LMXBs using new and archival data.

All interested persons are cordially invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
