What materials can be recycled at the College of Charleston?
The following materials may be recycled on campus:
  • paper (staples OK)
  • letterhead
  • index cards
  • magazines
  • newspapers
  • CPO (in large amounts)
  • telephone books
  • cardboard
  • books
  • #1 and #2 plastic
  • aluminum cans
  • steel cans
What materials cannot be recycled at the College of Charleston?
The following materials cannot be recycled on campus:
  • tape
  • glue
  • rubber bands
  • pizza boxes
  • coffee cups
What type of cardboard can be recycled? How?
Corrugated cardboard can be recycled. Please dispose of non-recyclable packing material, flatten the box, and place behind a blue recycling bin (or a "paper" bin if available). Large amounts of corrugated cardboard can also be taken to the marked dumpsters behind the fine arts building.
Can colored paper be recycled at the College of Charleston?
Pastel colored paper is the only colored paper that can be recycled at the College of Charleston. Examples of colored paper include yellow, canary, goldenrod, and pink. These colors are very typical in business use. Darker colors cannot be recycled at the College of Charleston. These colors contaminate the mix of papers that can be recycled. If too many darker colors are sent to the recycling center, the entire load may be refused.
How do I arrange a new pickup point? How do I get more blue recycling bins?

Do you have to remove staples from paper in order for it to be recycled?
No, regular standard staples are okay. However, metal clips must be removed.
Should you remove the caps from plastic bottles before putting into the recycling bin?

Help! What should I do if I have a large amount of recyclable materials to be collected?
Please call the Recycling Office at 3-5550 to arrange for pickup.
Can I recycle textbooks on campus?
While textbook recycling is not available on campus, there are three ways to prevent your used textbooks from ending up in a landfill. First, recent editions can often be resold at the campus bookstore. Second, books can be handed down to new users. Finally, they can be placed behind or next to paper recycling bins around campus.
I live in a sorority/ fraternity house. Can we recycle?
Easy! Go to the Romney St. recycling center to pick up as many recycling containers as needed as well as a handout with information concerning what can be picked up. At this time recycling is picked up in the College of Charleston vicinity every other Monday.
I live off campus, how can I recycle?
Easy! Go to the Romney St. recycling center to pick up as many recycling containers as needed as well as a handout with information concerning what can be picked up. The staff will help you with scheduled pickup dates.
