Housing

Each student will be assigned a dormitory room at the Grice Marine Laboratory. Normally a student will share a room with one other student. The dormitory has a kitchen and a washer and a dryer.

Each student must sign a Housing Contract (see below) upon arrival at the Grice Laboratory. A copy of this contract is included below. Students should read this carefully. Download this contract (Adobe Acrobat file).

for Students Enrolled in the Summer Research Program

Terms and Conditions (adapted from the GML Standard Contract)

Eligibility:
A resident of housing at the Grice Marine Laboratory must be enrolled at the College of Charleston.
Payment:
The fee for dormitory use is $485.00 for the summer. This fee will be covered by the summer program.
Violations of Policies:
The College of Charleston reserves the right to refuse the admission or readmission of a student if the student fails to meet College of Charleston admission requirements, or if the student has a past record of violation of College of Charleston policies or regulations. The College of Charleston will terminate this contract for the following reasons:
  • the student's health renders the student unqualified for group living,
  • the student violates the housing policies stated in this contract, whether such policies and regulations are now in effect or enacted after due notice thereof,
  • the student fails to enroll in or withdraws from the College of Charleston, or
  • the student is suspended or expelled from the College of Charleston.
Cancellation, Withdrawal and Termination:
The student may make a written request to the Director of Auxiliary Services for release from this contract at mid-semester if the request is submitted by September 15th in the fall, or February 15th in the spring. The student must vacate the premises by October 1st (fall) or March 1st (spring) or June 30 (summer). The charge for the half semester will be one half the semester rate, not a daily proration. Requests for a cancellation, withdrawal, or termination will be honored only if submitted in writing prior to the deadline date. The student is financially liable for housing fees incurred during the period of this contract, regardless of whether or not the dormitory space is occupied by the student during the said period, unless given the mid-semester release by the Director of Auxiliary Services. All other requests must be submitted in writing and will be granted only if an extraordinary circumstance exists.
Obligations of the College of Charleston:
  1. It shall grant the use of the dormitory facilities in accordance with the terms specified in this contract.
  2. In the event of mechanical, electrical or water difficulties, it shall make all reasonable efforts to restore service, but shall give no abatement in housing fees because of an inability to restore service and shall not be liable for an inconvenience occurring through no fault of the College of Charleston.
  3. In the event of a natural or other disaster, residents of the Grice Marine Laboratory will receive the College of Charleston attentions, emergency notifications and alternative housing options available to residents of the main campus.
Dormitory Regulations:
  1. The use and/or storage of the following objects is not permitted in the dormitory facility: waterbeds, firearms, fireworks, illegal substances, electrically amplified musical instruments, drum sets, and pets (mammalian). These objects may not be used or stored anywhere on the Fort Johnson campus.
  2. Non-mammalian pets may be housed in the dormitory facility only with the approval of the Director of the Grice Marine Laboratory.
  3. Smoking is not permitted in the dormitory facility.
  4. Overnight guests may be permitted for a period of two nights, but only with the written permission of the Director or the Laboratory Manager of the Grice Marine Laboratory.
  5. Changes and alterations to rooms (e.g., the painting of walls and construction of lofts) must be approved in advance by the Director or the Laboratory Manager of the Grice Marine Laboratory.
General Conditions:
  1. The student is responsible for knowing and observing the policies governing conduct and procedures as stated in the Guide to Residence Living and as set forth by this contract.
  2. The student is responsible for the condition of his or her assigned room and is jointly responsible, with other residents of the dormitory building, for the protection of public areas and equipment therein. The College of Charleston reserves the right to levy and collect charges for damages resulting from unauthorized use or alterations of rooms, equipment, or dormitory buildings. The College of Charleston also reserves the right to levy and collect charges for special cleaning necessitated by the improper care of rooms or equipment. Each student is responsible for inspecting her or his assigned room and the general condition of the dormitory facility upon her or his arrival.
  3. If proper notice of late arrival is not given to the Auxiliary Services Office by the second week of classes, the student may forfeit any right to the dormitory space. A student who enrolls and fails to occupy her or his assigned room will remain responsible for payments under the terms of this contract. Rooms and other spaces within the dormitory facility may not be sublet to another individual.
  4. The student agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the College of Charleston from any and all suits, claims, demands, liabilities, costs and expenses, including reasonable attorney's fees resulting from or arising out of any injury to the student, the student's personal property or to the property of others while in possession of the student during the term of this contract occurring through no fault of the College of Charleston.
  5. The student is required to possess health insurance while a resident of the dormitory facility.
Security, Inspection, and Searches:
  1. Inspection of rooms for sanitary and safety conditions, unauthorized property and property damage can be conducted by a College of Charleston employee only under the supervision of the Director or the Laboratory Manager of the Grice Marine Laboratory.
  2. The College of Charleston reserves the right for appropriate officials to search individual rooms under the supervision of the Director or the Laboratory Manager of the Grice Marine Laboratory in cases where there is reasonable cause to believe that the occupant has concealed within her or his room, property the possession of which is a violation of College of Charleston policy or Student Regulations. If such property is discovered, the College of Charleston may seize and hold it until proper disposition of the case has been made.
  3. The College of Charleston reserves the right to request a search warrant from the City of Charleston where there is probable cause to believe that the occupant has concealed within the room property possessions of which is a violation of municipal, state, or federal law.
Contract Period:
This contract is a binding agreement between the student resident and the College of Charleston Auxiliary Services Office for the period specified below: May 31, 2006 - August 9, 2006. Students MUST vacate their assigned dormitory room no later than August 10, 2006. This is necessary to prepare the dormitory for students returning in the fall. Special circumstances will be handled on a one-on-one basis. College of Charleston housing is required to be self-supporting by the State of South Carolina; therefore, the terms, conditions and services provided, as enumerated in this contract, are subject to change upon reasonable notice.
