I filled the dead channel with the live channel, adjusted the level to match the pasted chunk to the rest of the channel, and then amplified the low volume part somewhat. This show is our first, and is only now about to be distributed. You are the sixth person in the whole world to have a copy of this remaster. This was the PMG on their tour in support of their second album (as the PMG), American Garage. "Down Here On The Ground" is a Wes Montgomery tune, and they also perform J. Kern's "All The Things You Are," which Pat has continued to perform over the years in a variety of settings ... including on Question And Answer. The material comes from Bright Size Life, Watercolors, the white album, New Chautauqua (Pat's third "solo" album, released in 1979) and American Garage. Other covers include Keith Jarrett's "The Windup" and Ornette Coleman's "Broadway Blues," which had appeared on Bright Size Life with Jaco and Bob Moses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joni Mitchell Hissing of Summer Lawns Demo Tape 1. Original versions of this release fall into that ultra-legendary, exorbitantly priced category beyond most people's reach. It's the side we have here in bootleg form that caused all the fuss especially after both Taj Mahal Travellers and Les Rallizes Dénudés turned up as the most collectable Japanese bands of the late 20th century. As for the other two groups - Acid Seven, who knows? A bootleg on which they appear along with the Rallizes and Haino Keiji's Lost Aaraaff playing at the 1971 Trips festival in Japan is floating around, somewhere, but as to their music I have no idea. Minami Masato is a little less obscure. His first LP The Tropics has a few good moments and features Rallizes main-man Mizutani Takashi on the closing track but is basically dull folk-rock, I don't even know if it's "collectable" and really, who cares? Minami is still playing and recording with recent releases on the Captain Trip label, something that should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the way they keep bringing back the dead. Les Rallizes Dénudés are perhaps the most wilfully obscure group to have emerged from Japan (outside of the noise scene). This heavy guitar-based psychedelic band had their beginnings at Kyoto University in late 1967 with their first gig in 1968. While their recordings from this early period are still relatively restrained their live shows reputedly featured massive volume and the use of strobe lights and mirror for maxium audience-disorienting effect. Obviously this brings to mind comparisons with the Velvet Underground and their Exploding Plastic Inevitable. The ESP label and the San Francisco bands of the late '60s have also been referenced here. It seems the volume was too much for some - a relationship with an avant-garde theatre group between 1968-69 fell apart due to the excess of Rallizes' sound. April 1969 saw the band playing at the front lines of the Japanese student demonstrations, the Barricades A Go-Go concert at Kyoto University, organised by students occupying the university. This support for revolutionary causes ran deep with original member Wakabayashi involved in the 1970 Yodo-Go incident - members of the Japanese Red Army (Sekigun) hijacked a Japanese airliner to North Korea where most of the hijackers remain today. Rumour has it that guitarist/vocalist/group leader Mizutani Takashi was involved on some level with Sekigun and was asked to take part in the hijacking. While they were active live not much was happening in the studio. Some sessions were recorded in the 1970s but were never released. Other than the side on Oz Days Live the band only existed as a live experience. Whether anyone knew about them outside of Japan is pretty doubtful, as even within the country their lack of recordings and image made them particularly obscure. It wasn't until 1991 any other releases were made available, in August of that year three CDs simultaneously appeared on the band's own label. These were 67-69 Studio et Live, Mizutani/Les Rallizes Dénudés, and the 77 Live 2CD set. The only other official releases are a video released in 1992 and a 7" included with the Japanese Etcetera magazine in 1996. All are rare, sought-after and suitably priced; a recent Internet auction saw the three CDs selling at well over $2000. The 77 Live release is their best, a massive document of extreme feedback and distressed guitar with Mizutani's detached and drawled vocals laid over languid rhythms. It's staggering in intensity, rivalling the second PSF Fushitsusha Live set as ultimate Japanese rock document. While the Oz Days side recorded in 1972 hints at the extremities of the Rallizes' sound like the earlier recordings the guitars don't reach the immense levels of 77 Live. This is hinted at on Oz Days' first few moments of dense, roiling sound and the final track though there's some remarkably straight-sounding music here. It's similar to the material off the 67-69 and Mizutani/Rallizes CDs, pointing back to the bands' origin at the time of the Group Sounds and Folk Rock booms. It also demonstrates how the band were about more than extreme sonics - it's the melding of strong melody and Mizutani's dry, dark vocals with massive feedback/distortion levels that mark 77 Live as such a unique document and at a more formative stage the Oz Days side as essential listening. You should all know about Taj Mahal Travellers: improvisational musical collective co-founded by Kosugi Takehisa in 1969 whose members displayed a strong interest in Asian music forms and rejection of traditional Western music stylings. Equally important in their sound was the use of electronic processing of instruments and voices and an interest in the heterodyne phenomenon, where alternating currents of different frequencies combined to produce new frequencies, the sum and difference of the original frequencies. While Taj Mahal Travellers left only a few recordings they performed live extensively throughout Asia and Europe; famously in 1972 they travelled from Rotterdam to the Taj Mahal in a VW minibus via the Europe-Asia overland hippy trail playing at various locations on the way. The Oz Days side fits between the two major-label releases July 15, 1972 and August 1974, these three being the only official releases with the 1974 release reissued in 1998 and currently the only one anywhere near "available." On the Oz Days side the group is a stripped-down three-piece, making for a more minimalist sound than that created by the seven-member line-up on the first LP or the eight players on the 1974 double LP. What we get here are two hazy, droning tracks with the second, an all too short dream-like raga for violin and electronics going a long way towards justifying the existence of this particular release. The longer first track has Kosugi sketching short waves of melody from his violin over a liturgical-like vocal murmur, closer in sound to the incredible drone-document of his Catch Wave solo LP than the other Taj Mahal Travellers recordings. While it's reassuring that someone is making this music available again it's kind of a pity we have to hear it on a low-fi, low-quality pressing. Rallizes especially deserve a wider exposure; unfortunately a desire to retain some kind of mystique on the side of the band means we're unlikely to see anything made easily available from them. At least Taj Mahal Travellers had one of their hideously rare records reissued recently - here's hoping for more soon. -Paul Collett ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evan Parker & Susie Ibarra 11 April 2001 Ceremony Hall Austin, TX 1. untitled improvisation [14:33] 2. untitled improvisation (Parker solo) [13:55] 3. untitled improvisation [9:35] 4. untitled improvisation (Ibarra solo) [11:13] 5. untitled improvisation [11:59] 6. untitled improvisation [9:38] Evan Parker (ts-1,3,6; ss-2,5) Susie Ibarra (d) [Aud/dat>cdr] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phish 11/03/90 Boulder Theater - Boulder, CO Source: Separate from Soundboard 16 track Mix (see notes below) > DAT@44.1 Conversion: Fostex D5 > Monster Optical > Sek'd Prodif Plus > Samplitude v5.5 > CD Wave > mkwACT v0.97 **No DAE or resampling at all** "Sbd/Aud mixes: The following shows were recorded to DAT from a separate recording board at the shows. The liner notes by Lee read "This was the first live show of the songs from EVOL, at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas. The next day we would sputter through a set for New Music America in Houston, outdoors like a sideshow act on some sort of weird float, our music vanishing amongst the tall ugly bldgs downtown, in broad daylight. This night, however, things felt pretty good, despite borrowed amps+ drums (thanks to Furniture) and a set of (almost) all new songs- untried, stepping off the cliff. Our future soundman Terry Pearson was part owner of the Continental at the time, and he did the house sound for this and hundreds of other gigs there. The original cassette recording was made by Austin film-maker Bill Daniels; Wharton Tiers transferred it to digital; the end music is by Steve Fitch (Summer '86) and came with the tape. -LR 91" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- steely dan september 1, 1993 riverport ampitheater maryland heights, missouri (suburb of st. louis) disc 1 1. instrumental overture 2. green earings 3. bodhisattva 4. i.g.y. 5. josie 6. hey nineteen 7. book of liars 8. chain lightning 9. green flower street 10. home at last 11. black friday disc 2 1. tuzz's shadow 2. beacon blues 3. tomorrow's girls 4. babylon sisters 5. reelin' in the years 6. fall of '92 7. peg 8. third world man 9. teahouse on the tracks 10. my old school ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Talking Heads Punch and Judy Theater Grosse Pointe, Michigan August 21, 1978 Master Recorded by JEMS Teac mic > Sony 153SD TDK SA Cassette Master > Wavelab > FLAC 1 Intro 2 The Big Country 3 Warning Sign 4 The Book I Read 5 Stay Hungry 6 Artists Only 7 The Girls Want To Be With The Girls 8 Don't Worry About The Government 9 The Good Thing 10 With Our Love 11 Love Goes To Building On Fire 12 Electricity 13 New Feeling 14 Pulled Up 15 Psycho Killer encore 1: 16 Found A Job encore 2: 17 Take Me To The River 18 I'm Not In Love encore 3: 19 No Compassion We climb into the JEMS way-back machine: This show, in support of The Talking Heads second album (More Songs About Buildings and Food) was their first Detroit area appearance. It was also the first of a two-night stand at the intimate Punch and Judy Theater located in Grosse Pointe on Detroit's east side. They would return in October of 1978 for two more shows in one night at this venue. The local radio DJ recieved the booing during his intro because his radio station (for that matter all the rock stations in town) wouldn't play anything remotely sounding like punk or new wave. The Talking Heads certainly weren't getting airplay anywhere in Detroit except for WDET, the public radio station. Once the band come on the audience remains unobtrusive for the rest of the show and hence the recording, which came out very well ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Town & Country 20.feb.01 Casa del Popolo, Montreal, Qc Intro / Bookmobile / Hat Versus Hood / Hindenburg / I Am So Very Cold / That Old Feeling / Crossings aud > md > cdr ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- McCoy Tyner Trio 13-07-2000 Cirkusbygningen, Copenhagen Charnett Moffet (Bass) Al Foster (Drums) McCoy Tyner (Piano) Tranelike In The Tradition Will You Still Be Mine I Should Care Once Upon A Time I Wanna Tell You About It FM>HD>CDR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- wall to wall miles davis 24 march 2001 symphony space, nyc the following is a list of the discs i have, in temporal order. -->Approximately 12 noon to 1:45 p.m. 1. bobby previte's voodoo down orchestra - bitches brew music 2. terell stafford quartet - 3. terell stafford quartet - on green dolphin street 4. olu dara - music from the motion picture 'the hot spot' 5. olu dara - music from the motion picture 'the hot spot' 6. bobby watson - freedom jazz dance 7. bobby watson - gingerbread boy personel for this disc: bobby previte's voodoo down orch: previte (dr), ray anderson (tb), peter epstein, adam kolker, pete mccann, russ lossing, john dryden, jim mussen, jim pugliese, peter herbert, stephan crump terell stafford quartet: terell stafford, ed howard, george colligan, victor lewis olu dara w/ coster massamba, larry johnson, kwatei jones quartey, alonzo gardner bobby watson (sax) w/ victor lewis (dr), terell stafford (tp), edward simon (p), curtis lundy (b) --> approximately 1:45 pm to 3:30 1. intro to hagens' animation project 2. tim hagens' animation project 3. sex mob w/ bill frisell and dj logic 4. jane ira bloom 5. the campbell brothers - someday my prince will come 6. the campbell brothers - summertime 7. the campbell brothers - all blues 8. nora york personnel: tim hagens, bob belden (ss), scott kinsey (keys), david dyson (el b), zack danzinger (dr), dj kingsize (turntables) sex mob: stephen bernstein (slide tp), briggan krauss (ts), kenney wollesen (dr), tony scherr (b), bill frisell (g), dj logic (turntables) jane ira bloom w/ bobby previte, cameron brown, vincent bourgeyx the campbell brothers - phil (g), chuck (lap steel), darick (lap steel), and carlton (dr), malcom kirby (b) nora york w/ claire daly, dave hofstra, ronnie williams --> next disc is approximately 3:30-4:30 and includes: Urban Tap/Aura - Tamango (tap dancer) & Fabio Morgera (tp) 1. 0:26 Intro 2. 2:11 3. 3:50 Gemini: Double Image - Burnt Sugar/The Arkestra Chamber 4. 16:03 5. 8:46 Directions in New Music - Dave Douglas New Quintet w/ Dave Douglas (tp), Antonio Hart (alto sax), Uri Caine (el. p), James Genus (b), Calrence Penn (d) 6. 12:37 Loose Change from The Plugged Nickel - Ingrid Jensen Group w/ Ingrid Jensen (tp), Gary Thomas (tenor sax), Orrin Evans (keys), Ed Howard (b), Jeff "Tain" Watts (d) 7. 3:04 8. 19:27 "Walkin'" (Miles Davis) --> the following three discs cover approximately 7 pm to 10:30 pm disc 1: 1. intro to david sanchez 2. The cover bears a strong, if not identical, resem- blance to the well-known legitimate series of ORIGINAL MASTER DISC recordings on LP. So, what is so unique about THIS CD when we already have at least 15 different packagings of the same show, you might ask? Although this CD contains no new songs from this show, there are some unique features which make this a worth while acquisition.First off, the disc comes in a very nice laminate single sleeve cover that really looks like quality. The back cover is an (alleged - though probably authentic) shot of the back of the reel-to-reel tape box used by DIR Broadcasting Corp. The story behind the content: DIR Broadcasting Corp./ The King Biscuit Flower Hour present a tribute to The Who. The interviews contained on this disc are "snippets" by Pete, Keith, and Roger (no JAE comments) about how the band met, the dynamics etc. The interviews appear to be in mono / Hi-Fi. but crystal clear. The interviews and broadcast of the 1973 Spectrum Quadrophenia show MAY be either from a 1978 or September 1979 FM radio KBFH broadcast. In comparison with / to all other versions of this 1973 Quadrophenia show, with perhaps the exception of Phildelphia Free dom, this is probably THE best-sounding version to own. Recorded in "quadrophonic and stereophonic sound", this is more clear and crisp than any of the others. There appear to be comments during the show by Pete "If you don't come together shortly, you're going to be our straight man again, Pridden" referring to soundman Bobby Pridden (Pete's favorite "scapegoat") and the unnerving difficulties with out-of-sync tapes prior to Dr. Jimmy. The only MINOR thing to complain about is that some of the interviewers or band members comments are played slightly over in to the stage announcements. However, I think most folks appreciate the "authenticity" with which this CD takes a fresh look at a so often bootlegged show. Two thumbs up on this one mates. However, don't just take my word for it, judge for yourself.        01...Pete Townshend Interview        02...Keith Moon Interview        03...Can't Explain        04...Summertime Blues        05...My Generation        06...I Am The Sea        07...Real Me (sic The Real Me)        08...I'm One        09...Sea And Sand        10...Drowned        11...Bell Boy        12...Roger Daltrey Interview        13...Dr. Jimmy        14...Won't Get Fooled Again        15...Pinball Wizard        16...See Me, Feel Me *** end cut n paste other versions of the same bootleg give the date as 6 december 1973, in maryland. track 6 sounds like it was taken right off the album (perhaps it was played over the PA?). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- wilco loreley, germany 9 july 1999 1. california stars 2. i'm always in love 3. i must be high 4. hotel arizona 5. nothings ever going to stand in my way again 6. red-eyed and blue > i got you 7. she's a jar 8. shot in the arm 9. we're just friends 10. misunderstood 11. my darling 12. christ for president 13. can't stand it 14. monday ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian Wilson 29 January 2002 Disc 1 1.
