Education
The main objective of the SCSGC education program is to attract as many students as possible into the
South Carolina Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) pipeline. The program is divided into
three subsections — Higher Education, Pre-college Outreach, and K-12 activities. Many of the

- Higher Education:
- Research Experience for Undergraduates
SCSGC-REU enables mentors at Colleges throughout South Carolina (see
Consortium Member List) and the Virgin Islands to immerse students in "hands on" learning experiences while
working on NASA related aerospace research. The SCSGC-REU funds two REU programs that are closely
tied to research being conducted at a NASA center. After the selection of the REU site and mentor,
students from all colleges and universities in South Carolina and the Virgin Island apply to
the mentor for the 8-10 week long summer research program. The mentor receives up to $45,000/yr to
cover salaries, research expenses and undergraduate stipends, which the PI decides how to allocate.
- Coming Soon—Education Awards Program
Subprogram of the SCSGC Research and Education Awards Program
The primary objective of the REAP is to provide funding for faculty members to initiate or enhance research and education programs that have strong linkages to NASA’s Mission Directorates supporting the Vision for Space Exploration (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/exploration/main/index.html). Consequently, the overall goal is to effectively utilize the SCSGC resources: 1) to develop new research projects or directions, 2) to obtain unique training and exposure, and 3) to foster collaborations among the campuses, as well as with NASA and/or other federal agencies and the aerospace industry, in general. Please consult the Consortium Members for a list of SC Space Grant schools. The REAP is not intended to provide long-term continuing support for faculty members and priority will be given to new faculty members and other faculty members with strong research/education records who are proposing research/education activities in areas outside their established area(s). It is anticipated that faculty members receiving funding through the REAP will use the funds as an incubator for long-term research/education relationships with NASA Centers and other federal agencies.
- EDUCATION RESEARCH AWARDS is intended to provide faculty members with research support for science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)-related activities, such as (but not limited to) initiating an education research project, enhancing an existing education research activity, supporting a graduate student to join a faculty member at a field center for part of a summer term to help with the education research project, developing a new education research project among scientists at several SCSGC campuses, or providing faculty summer support at facilities not covered by existing programs. ($8,000 maximum per award, not including matching funds).
