Service-Learning definition: Service-learning is a teaching method that combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility.

    Fully integrated service-learning courses:
  • require students to participate actively in organized service;
  • conduct service to meet the expressed needs of the community;
  • utilize integrated service to enhance the academic curriculum; and
  • include structured means for the students to reflect on the service experience.

Service-learning courses provide means for students to connect their service experience to their coursework, personal development, and civic involvement. The goal of service-learning is to improve the quality of life of the entire community through partnerships, create mutual understanding, make learning come alive, and prepare students for lifelong community service and civic engagement.
