Student Club Descriptions
Beta Alpha Psi is an international honor society for high quality accounting students that recognizes academic excellence and complements members' formal education by providing interaction among students, faculty, and professionals, and fosters lifelong growth, service and ethical conduct. In December 2006, the Beta Alpha Psi chapter at the College of Charleston began operations. Between January 2007 and May 2008, the chapter will be enjoying probationary status. During this period, we will initiate members, have a Professional Speaker Series, participate in various service projects and groom pledges for membership similar to other chapters around the country. We will also send representatives to national and regional events. Once we complete our three semester probationary period, we will be granted an official charter (and our own Greek letters) from the international office of Beta Alpha Psi. The primary mission of our chapter is to introduce students to as many career options for accountants as possible and improve their access to the career options of their choice. For more information, visit our web-site at www.cofc.edu/~bap or contact Dr. Michael Cipriano at ciprianom@cofc.edu.Club of Hospitality and Tourism The purpose of the Club of Hospitality and Tourism (CHAT) is to provide opportunities for experiential, professional and academic growth to our members through a variety of enrichment activities and experiences in the Hospitality and Tourism Management industry. C.H.A.T. is student-run and works closely with the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management to coordinate complimentary activities. The Finance and Investment Club The Finance & Investment Club is for any student at the College of Charleston interested in learning about finance and investing. The Club has prestigious speakers from the community regularly present, special seminars on topics such as derivatives, technical analysis, retirement planning, and real estate investing, and a Portfolio Management Contest simulation every semester in which the eight winners receive a share of $1000 in cash prizes. Former speakers include: the former director of Merrill Lynch's $7 billion technology fund and current hedge fund manager, a local Micro-cap mutual fund manager, a former Specialist on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, and a former Marketmaker on the NASDAQ. Future club ambitions include the creation of a member managed scholarship fund. For more information about the Finance & Investment Club, please visit http://stu.cofc.edu/~sic/. Human Resource Management Club The purpose of Human Resource Management Club is to acquaint students with the field of human resource management and labor relations. By providing learning opportunities through human resource practitioners, the club members will gain insight into current trends and remain up-to-date on new developments in the field. The Human Resource Management Club is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management. For further information about this club, contact Laura Demarse at demarsel@cofc.edu. The School of Business and Economics Society The primary benefit of the School of Business and Economics Society (SBES) is retention of students and faculty by enhancing the collegiate experience. This program will also enhance the image and prestige of the School of Business and Economics not only within the College of Charleston, but also regionally and nationally. The end goal is to foster a greater sense of community and success within the School of Business and Economics. Furthermore, it will give students an opportunity to become leaders and grow as individuals. Business Majors who are interested will go through a formal application and interview process. Students on academic probation are prohibited from joining the SBES. This competitive application process will signify a real accomplishment upon being selected. For more information contact Ami Ziff, SBES President at aziff@edisto.cofc.edu. Want to create hope and economic opportunity for others while discovering your own potential? Join Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) and become a part of the largest student organization in the world, dedicated to teaching others concepts such as entrepreneurship and business ethics. Members of our team apply skills learned in the classroom by creatively solving real world problems. Through educational outreach projects, they discover and expand the scope of their personal and professional potential. Results of our projects are presented in regional, national, and global competitions judged by panels comprised of the world's most prominent executives. SIFE students are recruited directly from the competitions by these executives because they demonstrate the skills and abilities employers value most in their employees. Want to learn more? Hear what other students have to say on a brief video, “Creating Economic Opportunity,” at the SIFE website http://www.sife.org/ . If you are ready for a College of Charleston SIFE experience then contact Cantrece at TateCenter@cofc.edu. SIFE meets every Wednesday at 7pm in the Tate Center for Entrepreneurship. The Student Port club is dedicated to promoting interest and experience in the fields of Transportation and Global Logistics to students at the college of Charleston.
