Over $2.5 million in grant-funding
went into teaching and research programs in 97-98. SSM faculty

Sciences and Mathematics programs
at the College of Charleston have been recognized for their standards
and their overall quality. South Carolina's Commission on Higher Education
recently reviewed the 39 physical science and 42 life science programs
in the State. Three of the five Commendations for Excellence that were
awarded to physical science programs and three of the six awarded in the
life sciences went to the College of Charleston. The College is unique
in that every undergraduate science program reviewed was awarded a Commendation.
From the Commissioner on Higher Education:
Biology
"Because of high productivity in all three of the Commission's categories,
the superb teaching laboratories, the success of the faculty in acquiring
research grants and involving undergraduates in the research projects,
and the professional success of graduates of the program, the Biology
program at the College of Charleston is commended for excellence."
Chemistry
& Biochemistry
"The number of graduates produced each year from this program is
astounding. They have done an incredible job of getting the students through
the program in reasonable time periods...This is an outstanding undergraduate
program from every perspective and certainly a program of distinction...
in the region."
Computer
Science
Major in either Computer Science or Computer Information Systems for some
of the best learning experiences, job opportunities and the highest starting
salaries of any major at the College of Charleston. With computing and
research facilities dedicated to the majors, students in Computer Science
are enveloped in a stimulating intellectual and highly creative environment.
There are some 170 majors in computer science and computer information
systems. The faculty currently consists of ten roster faculty members.
Geology
"This is an outstanding program that attracts good students...Its
graduates are in demand for, and take, professional jobs in South Carolina.
Through outreach and involvement in K-12 schools and with other local
organizations, the faculty serves the Charleston region very effectively."
Mathematics
The B.S. program in the Department of Mathematics is "very good,
has regional distinction and has the potential to develop into an undergraduate
program of national distinction". This degree, with its options in
Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and in (secondary) Teaching, "offers
good flexibility and diversity to majors" and should be attractive
"to students seeking an excellent mathematics undergraduate education".
Our faculty are "strong and dedicated teachers" who have a "very
strong research record"; a number of them have earned national recognition.
Physics
& Astronomy
"The university should continue to support this gem of a program...It
is a model for physics programs in four-year colleges. Other South Carolina
institutions should follow its model of attention to the needs of undergraduates
with diverse career aspirations." |
