TYLER MARTIN
Hurricane Katrina Relief

Striving to be "A Vessel of Good Character"
By Matt Simeon

While many students look forward to Fall Break because it’s the first major time off from classes in the fall to go no vacation or just party for four nights, Tyler Martin chose to spend his time helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina. That’s not the only exemplary example of Tyler’s character.
He also helps organizations dedicated to helping less-fortunate groups such as a school for the deaf bach home and also here in Charlestson at St. Matthew's Community Outreach Center. Tyler doesn’t do these countless hours of community service for the recognition but instead to know that at the end of the day, Tyler Martin has made a positive impact on someone else’s life.

About Tyler Martin...
Hometown:
Cincinnati, Ohio
Degree Objective:
Business Administration: Concentration in Leadership
Expected Date of Graduation:
May 2007
Current Volunteer Activities:
St. Rita Fest- St. Rita School for the Deaf, Cincinnati; St. Matthew’s Community Outreach Center, Charleston
What are you most proud of contributing to your organization?
Most of the children I work with come from low-income families that lack structure and consistent, sound, personal values. I am proud to serve as a positive, male role model for many of the children that also lack this type of figure in their lives. Core values and ethics are extremely important in leading a positive, successful life and I not only enjoy helping these children with their homework and helping them succeed in school , but I also very much enjoy acting as a vessel of good character and setting examples for them to physically interact with and see firsthand.
Previous Volunteer Activities:
Camp counselor at Camp Kern; Hurricane Katrina Clean-up in Hattiesburg and Pass Christian, Miss.
What do you enjoy about community service?
Knowing that I am positively affecting the lives of other people, directly or not, or helping them in some way truly lights a fire inside me.
