Students interested in joining our final cohort beginning in Fall 2024 are invited to apply through The Citadel. This option to apply through The Citadel is only available for students who are able to attend in person.**

The Master of Arts in English program at the College of Charleston was formerly jointly run by the College of Charleston and The Citadel. Earn your master's in this 30-hour program. You will take advanced coursework in literature, literary and cultural analysis and composition and rhetoric. Our small classes foster lively discussions, close analysis and the development of an intellectual community. Dates & Deadlines
Fall Deadline
The priority deadline for funding considerations is January 15. However, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until July 1.
Summer Deadline
College of Charleston: March 1
The Citadel: April 1

Application Process
- Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.
- Provide an earned bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- International applicants should refer to the guidelines published by The Citadel or The College of Charleston, depending on their chosen institution.

Admission Criteria
M.A. Degree-seeking Students
- Maintain a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.500 on a 4.000 scale and a 3.000 in the major. Submit at least two letters of recommendation from former professors or immediate supervisors.
- Include a two-page statement of educational goals and interest in a graduate program in English.
- Submit a writing sample demonstrating literary analysis and research skills, such as a research paper from an advanced undergraduate English course.
- Optional: Submit scores from the GRE or MAT if applying for campus-wide fellowships (GRE minimum composite score of 300 and 4.0 on the writing assessment section. MAT minimum score of 45).
