The Master of Arts in English program at the College of Charleston is jointly run by the College of Charleston and The Citadel. Earn your master's in this 30-hour program. You will take advanced coursework in literature, literary and cultural analysis and composition and rhetoric. Whether you choose to attend classes in person or online, you'll have access to the resources and expertise of both institutions. Our small classes foster lively discussions, close analysis and the development of an intellectual community. How to apply 


The entire application process is online. The documents outlined below are required components of the application. A file is not complete until all documents have been submitted and processed, so read carefully and prepare your application materials in advance of applying.
  • Dates & Deadlines

    Fall Deadline

    The priority deadline for funding considerations is January 15. However, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until July 1. 

    Summer Deadline

    College of Charleston: March 1

    The Citadel: April 1 

  • Application Process 

    • Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.
    • Provide an earned bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • International applicants should refer to the guidelines published by The Citadel or The College of Charleston, depending on their chosen institution.

  • Admission Criteria

    M.A. Degree-seeking Students

    • Maintain a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.500 on a 4.000 scale and a 3.000 in the major. Submit at least two letters of recommendation from former professors or immediate supervisors. 
    • Include a two-page statement of educational goals and interest in a graduate program in English.
    • Submit a writing sample demonstrating literary analysis and research skills, such as a research paper from an advanced undergraduate English course. 
    • Optional: Submit scores from the GRE or MAT if applying for campus-wide fellowships (GRE minimum composite score of 300 and 4.0 on the writing assessment section. MAT minimum score of 45).
