Interdisciplinary Minor

Minor

“This program has allowed me to explore the rich cultures that I’ve always been interested in. It’s a comprehensive guide to new ways of thought via passionate professors and it creates a community among students who favor a new type of learning experience — one that fosters open discussion and lasting friendships.”
– Kat Humphries ’11

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “international studies?” Diplomats voicing their opinions on the floor of the United Nations? The Arab Spring with activists demonstrating in the streets of Cairo or Tripoli? Or perhaps you envision the dynamic commercial activity that bolsters the burgeoning economies of China and India? Whatever your impression, if you are interested in the real world of global politics, multinational corporations and international organizations, our International Studies Program will stamp your academic passport.

It may sound like a cliché, but the world becomes more and more interconnected every day. Developing an informed, global perspective regarding other cultures, geography, politics and issues is an indispensable tool for success in an increasing number of fields.

At the College of Charleston, our international studies minor offers a variety of elective courses, so you can concentrate on specific geographic areas, or study contemporary global issues such as international economy, security or human rights. As a result, you’ll be able to match your coursework with your specific educational and career goals.

Because our students are challenged by complex problems and learn to think through possible solutions from alternative perspectives, they’re prepared for any number of careers that require critical-thinking skills. Successful international studies graduates typically pursue careers in:

  • United States Foreign Service
  • international publishing
  • global corporations
  • embassies
  • international non-governmental organizations

Whether you’re thinking about going to graduate school, or are interested in a career in business or international development — or something entirely different — you can be sure that our International Studies Program will give you the knowledge and skills you’ll need to make important contributions to the global society.
